From helpless puppies to curious explorers: in the first four weeks of life, baby dogs go through a lot of exciting developments. Read here about what they are and why the little ones still rely completely on their dog mother during this time.

Bitches are pregnant for about nine weeks and then give birth to an average of two to six puppies. The little ones usually stay with their mother for twelve weeks and need food, warmth and protection in the first few weeks.

Dog puppies in the first two weeks of life

A newborn dog still has eyes and ears closed. He can not smell much either, communicates through beeping and spends the first days and nights cuddling with his siblings and mother, drinking milk, being cleaned and sleeping. 

At just under a week, one or the other baby dog ​​makes its first attempts to crawl through the whelping box and tries to stand on its own legs or walk a few steps in the second week. 

When the little ones are between 10 and 16 days old, their eyes and ears open – but it takes a few days for the dogs to hear and see properly.

The development in week three and four

We Need to Ask Why do dogs bite before we can address it

Dogs bite people most often when they feel threatened. It is a natural instinct that is still present in domesticated dogs, no matter how beautiful they are. Therefore, it is important that everyone who interacts with dogs understands what can provoke this aggressive behavior.

• Dogs can bite to defend themselves, their territory, or a member of their pack. Mother dogs also protect their puppies.
• Scaring a dog, such as waking a dog or suddenly approaching a child from behind, can provoke a dog bite.
• Running away from a dog can make him bite, even when he’s playing. You may think it’s part of the fun at first, but even that can quickly lead to aggression.
• Dogs in a fearful situation can bite whoever approaches them. This can be as serious as being abused or abandoned, or it can be something you find normal, such as a loud noise.

How to stop dog bites

• If you suspect or know that your dog has anxious or aggressive tendencies, always warn others. Do not let your dog approach people or other animals unless the situation is strictly controlled. If necessary, use a muzzle.
• Keep your dog’s vaccinations up to date (especially rabies) and see your veterinarian regularly to do a wellness check.

How to interact with dogs

Dogs are cute and often friendly, so you get excited when you see them. However, you can quickly turn on someone they don’t know. Even if you do not have a dog yourself, it is important to know the correct behavior for dealing with dogs and to know how and when you approach a dog. Teach these things to children too, so everyone knows what to do to prevent dog bites.

• Never try to approach or touch an unknown dog without first obtaining the owner’s permission. If an owner is not present, do not go near the dog.
• If you meet an unknown dog, let the dog come to you. Squat or turn to the side. Let it smell on your hand before you stroke it.
• Do not put your face near an unknown dog. This includes ‘hugs and kisses’.
• Understand the dog’s body language. Most dogs show specific warning signs before biting.
• If you are cornered by a dog, stay calm and avoid eye contact. Never run or scream. When the dog stops paying attention to you, go back slowly.
• If you are knocked over by a dog, fall to the side in a fetal position and cover your head and face. Stay very calm and calm.
• Never approach a dog that eats, sleeps, or cares for puppies. Dogs in these situations are more protective and can scare.
• Never leave small children or babies alone with a dog.
• Do not approach, touch, or try to move an injured dog. Instead, contact a veterinarian or animal control.

When a dog bite occurs

Do not hesitate if your dog bites someone, do the following:

1. Stay calm.
2. Limit your dog to a box or other room.
3. Help the victim wash the wound thoroughly with warm, soapy water.
4. Be polite and compassionate towards the victim of the bite. Avoid blaming or becoming defensive. This does not mean that you have to admit mistakes. Remember that what you say can be used against you later if legal or civil action is taken.
5. Consult a doctor for the victim of the bite. Depending on the strength of the bite, an ambulance may be required. No matter how small the bite, the victim should seek medical help. Dog bites that look mild on the surface can get serious very quickly.
6. Offer to contact a friend or family member for the victim.
7. Exchange contact information with the victim. If necessary, enter your insurance details.
8. If there were witnesses, request their contact information.
9. Contact your veterinarian for your dog’s medical records.
10. Inform the local authorities about the incident and follow their instructions.

Dog bites and the law

Dog biting laws can vary widely depending on local jurisdiction. It is important that you understand the laws in your area so that you know what to expect. The following conditions usually apply in dog bite cases:

• You must provide proof of your dog’s rabies vaccination.

Like the Wobbler, the classic KONG is a toy which your dog has to tip and roll around to get the treats which are hidden inside. The classic design features two holes, a smaller one on the top end which smaller treats such as kibble can fit through, and a larger hole on the bottom which can accommodate larger treats. When using this toy stuff the bottom end with cookies and top it up with kibble. The cookies will be harder to get out due to their size but are much more rewarding!

Einstein Says: Us dogs love mixing it up! Why not give your dog the Wobbler one day and the classic KONG the next? That way you will keep variety in his life!

3. Paw Hide Puzzle

The Paw Hide puzzle is a cool little toy where you place treats under the cups. Your dog will smell the treats hiding under the cups and will have to lift them off to get at the food! Be warned, however, that some owners have reported problems with their dog not being able to lift out the cups, or the plastic cracking which can lead to sharp edges. Einstein Says: If you use this toy, why not get creative? Instead of filling every single hole with treats, why not put them under only some of the cups. You can even put different treats into each holder to give your dog a surprise!

How To Get Your Dogs Attention is the big question, but do you find yourself trying hopelessly to get your dog’s attention? Does “in one ear and out the other” sound familiar? Just imagine the consequences if our dog ran onto a busy road and was not able to listen to us calling him back!

In this article I will cover 5 simple tips you can apply immediately to help your dog become more attentive with my take on Dog Obedience Training. Anyone can do dog training whether you live in Houston, San Diego, Austin or anywhere in the world.

1. Dog Obedience Brain Training

Brain training is a super effective way to increase your dog’s ability to pay attention to you!

Many of the games in my Brain Training for Dogs course are designed to improve your dog’s attentiveness. One of my favorites is “The Airplane Game,” which you can access for free. In this simple game your dog will learn the following important skills:

• How to pay attention to you on command.
• How to maintain focus on you despite distractions – unlocking the pathway to super obedience.
• How to use his hidden intelligence to figure out puzzles.

2. The “Smacking Sound”

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a noise we could make at any time to get our dog to immediately pay attention to us? Well, fortunately for us there is, and it’s called the “smacking sound”! But before we can harness its power, we need to teach our dog that this particular sound = food.

To do this, with your dog in a quiet room, make a smacking sound as though you were kissing the air, then immediately give him a treat. It doesn’t matter what he’s doing when you give him the treat (so long as he’s not doing anything bad like tearing up the sofa), the idea is simply to show him that whenever he hears the sound, he gets treats. After doing this for a while, you should notice that your dog looks at you for his treat whenever you make the sound. With continued practice, you can start using the smacking sound in everyday life when you want to grab your dog’s attention!

Keep in mind, however, that the smacking sound may be less effective at times when your dog is too worked up. For example, if he has seen something outside that he reacts strongly to, your sound may go unnoticed. One remedy for this is the “Look at That” game found in the Brain Training for Dogs course but be sure read our brain training for dogs review. In “Look at That,” we will work specifically on teaching your dog to pay attention to the smacking sound despite strong distractions.

Einstein Says: Don’t like using the smacking sound? No problem! You can replace the smacking sound with any other sound you like, such as a whistle or a pop. Just make sure the sound you choose is loud enough to be heard in busier environments, and that it is a sound you can make yourself.

3. The Importance of Incentives

How would you feel about the idea of working without getting paid? This is exactly how our dogs may feel when we ask them to perform mundane tasks without rewarding them for their efforts! That is why incentives are so important in dog training.

There are many different types of incentive, but food rewards are the most common. These rewards are given to a dog whenever he successfully performs a certain action. So let’s say we just started teaching our dog to “sit” for the first time. When he sits successfully, we would reward his effort by slipping him a doggy biscuit or piece of kibble. Now, the next time we ask him to sit, he will be eager to do so because he knows that he will get something tasty in return!

In the Brain Training for Dogs program I cover techniques which allow you to stop giving your dog a treat every time he successfully performs a certain action, and also introduce other forms of reward.

4. Reward Voluntary Check-ins

I love this part of Dog obedience training! When you are out in the yard with your dog, how often does he pay attention to you? Most likely, not very much, as he’s far too busy exploring the world with his powerful sniffer. Maybe it’s time for a little change…

Make it a habit when you are out in the yard to bring along some high-value treats (e.g. plain cooked chicken slices). Keep these treats handy in a pocket or treat bag. Now every time your dog happens to walk within arm’s reach of you, praise him and extend your hand to offer him a treat. If you do this often enough, positive reinforcement will work its magic and you’ll soon notice your dog checking in with you more and more. This is great news, because it means he is learning that you are worthy of his attention!

5. Right Place, Right Time

Choosing to begin training sessions at the right place and time can play a big role in whether or not your dog is able to pay attention.

It’s best to avoid training your dog when you first come home from work and he is all eager and excited to greet you, or when he’s all hyped up and bouncing off the walls after mealtime. Instead, wait until your dog is calmer and more capable of focusing, and use these times to your advantage.

You may also want to avoid training a new behavior in an environment where there are lots of distracting sights, sounds, and smells (e.g. the yard), as this makes it harder for your dog to stay focused on you. Instead, try training in a quiet room at first. It’s also a good idea to avoid rooms with windows if your dog is easily distracted by things he sees outside.

Einstein Says: Once your dog gets good at performing a new behavior, you can try taking him to a more distracting location for an added challenge. By teaching your dog to perform the behavior despite the added distractions, it will become more reliable.
